It’s official — with macOS 26 on the horizon, Apple is saying goodbye to a legacy technology that powered some of the most creative moments in Mac history: FireWire.

Once the go-to connection for external drives, camcorders, and audio interfaces, FireWire helped define the early 2000s era of digital media production. But as Apple moves forward with faster, more efficient standards like USB-C and Thunderbolt, FireWire support is being quietly phased out — and macOS 26 may be the last nail in the coffin.

💡 Why It Matters:

FireWire was revolutionary in its time, offering speeds and reliability that USB 1.0 and 2.0 simply couldn’t match. It was a favorite among filmmakers, musicians, and photographers for years — especially on classic machines like the Power Mac G4, early MacBook Pros, and the beloved iMac G5.

But as technology evolves, so do workflows. Most modern Macs haven’t included FireWire ports in over a decade, and even adapters are becoming harder to come by. With macOS 26 removing key system-level support, devices that still rely on FireWire will likely become unusable without major workarounds.
