If you’ve ever cringed at juggling files between your Mac and a Windows PC, you’re not alone. With macOS Tahoe, sharing files across platforms just got easier. Whether you’re working in a mixed-device household or collaborating with Windows users, here’s how to make it work smoothly.
✅ What’s New & Why It Matters
Tahoe drops older Apple-specific protocols in favor of SMB, the standard many Windows setups already use — which means compatibility matters more than ever.
You can now share from a Windows PC to your Mac or vice-versa, opening more possibilities for storage use, creative workflows, or repurposing older hardware.
For MacHQ customers, this means your Mac, iPad, and PC can all play nice — no more workarounds or cloud juggling.
🛠 How to Set It Up
From Windows → Mac:
Enable Network Discovery & File Sharing on the Windows PC (under Private networks).
Right-click a folder → Properties → Sharing → Share. Choose your user accounts.
On your Mac, use Finder → Go → Connect to Server and enter something like smb://IPaddress/folder. Then authenticate with the Windows credentials.
From Mac → Windows:
On the Mac: System Settings → General → Sharing → File Sharing (toggle on). Click Options → ensure “Share files & folders using SMB” is selected.
Add the folder under Shared Folders and configure permissions.
On Windows: File Explorer → Network → select the Mac (or use \\MacName\Folder) and log in with the Mac account credentials.
